Treatment of neonatal chlamydial conjunctivitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society Jul 14, 2018
Zikic A, et al. - Researchers performed the first systematic review and meta-analysis of antibiotic treatments for neonatal chlamydial conjunctivitis. They analyzed randomized and nonrandomized studies evaluating the effects of erythromycin, azithromycin, or trimethoprim in neonates with chlamydial conjunctivitis. Evidence suggests higher cure rates with erythromycin at 50 mg/kg per day for 14 days than azithromycin. Neonates receiving erythromycin might experience adverse gastrointestinal effects, including diarrhea, watery stools, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The adverse effects might be higher when the dose of erythromycin is not adjusted to the infant’s weight.
