Treatment of hypertension in old patients without previous cardiovascular disease
Journal of Hypertension Oct 08, 2019
Bager JE, Hjerpe P, Manhem K, et al. - Including patients with hypertension aged 40–90 years, identified from a primary care register, researchers undertook this investigation to compare the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), including nonfatal acute myocardial infarction or stroke, at blood pressure levels that meet current recommendations vs risk at lower levels, especially in older patients. They excluded cases with a history of cancer, diabetes mellitus or CVD. Overall 31,704 patients were analyzed. Of these, 26,663 were 40–75 years old and 5,041 were 76–90 years old. Participants were observed over a mean duration of 2 years. Findings revealed no harm was caused by blood pressure levels lower than those currently recommended in older patients. Instead, a link between lower SBP and lesser risk of CVD was indicative of the beneficial influence of lower SBP.
