Treatment and outcomes of oligometastatic colorectal cancer limited to lymph node metastases
Clinical Colorectal Cancer Jun 28, 2021
Mathai VK, Aung SY, Wong V, et al. - Because the optimal treatment of isolated distant lymph node metastases (IDLNM) from a colorectal primary, is not clearly established therefore, researchers herein used the Treatment of Recurrent and Advanced Colorectal Cancer registry to assess the results of patients with IDLNM managed with systemic therapies plus locoregional therapy with curative intent vs systemic therapies with palliative intent. There were 3408 metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients diagnosed 2009-2020, of which 93 (2.7%) had IDLNM. Treatment with curative intent was received by 24 (25.8%) mCRC patients with IDLNM and these patients experienced a significantly better overall median survival when compared with those treated with palliative intent. For mCRC patients with IDLNM, considering curative management strategies (radiotherapy or surgery), with or without systemic therapy, is recommended where appropriate as evaluated by the multidisciplinary team.
