Treatment and long-term clinical outcomes of incidental pulmonary embolism in patients with cancer: An international prospective cohort study

Journal of Clinical Oncology May 28, 2019

Kraaijpoel N, et al. - In this observational cohort study, researchers examined cancer patients in whom pulmonary embolism was incidentally detected, focusing on current treatment strategies available and the long-term clinical outcomes of this condition. Overall 695 patients unselected adults with active cancer and a recent diagnosis of incidental pulmonary embolism were included, with a mean age 66 years and 58% being male. Colorectal (21%) and lung cancer (15%) were the most frequent cancer types. Among participants, a significant risk of recurrent venous thromboembolism was observed despite anticoagulant treatment. The observed risk of recurrent venous thromboembolism in patients with subsegmental pulmonary embolism appeared to be similar to that of patients with more proximal clots.
