Trauma-informed care improves management of paradoxical vocal fold movement patients

Cristel RT, et al. - Researchers evaluated the utility of the Life Events Checklist-5 (LEC-5) and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Checklist for Civilians (PCL-C) questionnaires for recognizing patients who have experienced emotional trauma that was being referred for Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD, a variety of conditions for which the regulation and coordination of vocal fold movements are part of the description of chronic cough or difficulty breathing) to the Chicago Institute for Voice Care. Utilizing the PCL-C and LEC-5, the principles of trauma-informed care principles were applied to patients initially referred for VCD who had previously been found to have traumatic events. Early mental health screening was recommend to establish a multidisciplinary team in paradoxical vocal fold motion disorder.
