Transversus abdominis plane block with liposomal bupivacaine for pain control after cesarean delivery: A retrospective chart review
Journal of Pain Research Dec 15, 2018
Baker BW, et al. - Researchers investigated the effectiveness of transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block using liposomal bupivacaine (LB) to reduce post-cesarean pain. They performed a single-center retrospective chart review of 201 patients aged ≥18 years who underwent cesarean delivery; of these, 101 were treated with LB TAP block (LB-TAPB) and 100 without LB-TAPB. Mean postsurgical opioid consumption and mean AUC of pain scores reduced significantly in relation to treatment with LB-TAPB vs without LB-TAPB. LB-TAPB treatment also led to significantly shorter mean discharge-ready times, post-anesthesia care unit-ready times, and length of stay. Furthermore, significantly decreased mean times to ambulation and solid food, and numerically reduced mean time to bowel movement, make multimodal pain management incorporating TAP block with LB 266 mg as an effective approach to reducing opioid requirements and improving analgesia post-cesarean delivery.
