Transvenous lead extraction at the time of cardiac implantable electronic device upgrade: complexity, safety and outcomes

Barakat AF et al. – This single–center study reported complication rates with transvenous lead extraction (TLE) at the time of device upgrade. The study concluded successful TLEs in majority of patients with low complication rates.
Methods
Results
- 15% lead malfunction, 9% previous abandoned leads, 6% vascular access occlusion, or 3% leads on advisory were few of the concomitant lead management issues.
- Special extraction tools were required in 75.4% of procedures.
- During planned extractions, 3.8% of patients required extraction due to damage of co–existing leads.
- Procedural and clinical success rates were 96.6% and 97.2%, respectively.
- Major and minor complication rates were 1% and 1.4%, respectively.
