Transfusion threshold of hemoglobin 80 g/L is comparable to 100 g/L in terms of bleeding in cardiac surgery: A prospective randomized study
Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Nov 11, 2017
Laine A, et al. - Transfusion of red blood cells (RBC) to deal with anemia after cardiac surgery may cause adverse effects and increase cost. Researchers presumed that the restrictive hemoglobin threshold (Hb of 80 g/L) vs the higher Hb threshold (Hb 100 g/L) may aggravate bleeding more. They found that for RBC transfusion in cardiac surgery, Hb threshold of 80 g/L was comparable to 100 g/L in terms of bleeding and possibly short-term complications.
