Transesophageal Echocardiography – Dysphagia Risk in Acute Stroke (TEDRAS): A prospective, blind, randomized and controlled clinical trial

European Journal of Neurology Oct 14, 2020

Hamzic S, Braun T, Butz M, et al. - Since the prevalence of dysphagia in patients with acute stroke undergoing transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) remains unclear, researchers conducted this Transesophageal Echocardiography – Dysphagia Risk in Acute Stroke (TEDRAS) study to evaluate the impact of TEE on swallowing among patients with acute stroke. TEDRAS was a prospective, blind, randomized, controlled trial carried out at the community hospital Gesundheitszentrum Wetterau in Friedberg/Hesse (Germany). In total, 34 patients (10 women and 24 men) were randomly allocated to the intervention group (N=19) and to the control group (N=15). The findings of the TEDRAS study exhibited a significant increase in all dysphagia outcome scores in acute stroke patients in the intervention group immediately following TEE in the between‐group comparisons for saliva and small and large liquid boli. For at least 24 hours, the findings show that TEE has had a detrimental impact on swallowing in these patients.
