Trajectories and risk factors for anxiety and depression in children and adolescents with cancer: A 1-year follow-up
Cancer Medicine Jul 30, 2021
Yardeni M, Campino GA, Hasson-Ohayon I, et al. - Researchers longitudinally analyzed the trajectories as well as the risk factors for anxiety and depressive symptoms and disorders among children and adolescents suffering from cancer. This study included 99 patients, of whom 48% fulfilled criteria for anxiety and/or depressive disorders at least once during the follow-up period. A significant reduction in Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) pediatric and parent anxiety and depression scores as well as in the rate of depressive disorders was evident over time, while the observed rates of anxiety disorders continued to be stable. Significant predictors for the presences of anxiety disorders at endpoint included: anxiety PROMIS pediatric and parent scores at baseline, having brain tumors and being in the acute treatment phase. These data emphasize that screening for anxiety and disorders is important in children suffering from cancer, particularly in those with brain tumors and at the acute phase of treatment.
