Trabecular microbypass stent and phacoemulsification in African American patients with open-angle glaucoma: Outcomes and effect of prior laser trabeculoplasty
Journal of Glaucoma Jan 16, 2021
Bargoud AR, Lira J, An S, et al. - In this multicenter, retrospective case series, experts aspired to explore whether iStent/phacoemulsification reduces intraocular pressure (IOP) and/or medication usage in African American patients with glaucoma and to ascertain if prior selective laser trabeculoplasty would affect outcomes of iStent/phacoemulsification. Eyes with a confirmed glaucoma diagnosis in African American patients were involved. Eyes with neovascular glaucoma or closed angle glaucoma and eyes that underwent previous incisional glaucoma surgery have been eliminated. Eighty-nine eyes were involved in the research and data for 66 eyes were available at postoperative year 1. IOP spikes on postoperative day 1 and microhyphemas were the most common complications. There was a significant reduction in IOP and drug use 1 year after iStent/phacoemulsification in this cohort. In African American patients with glaucoma, iStent/phacoemulsification is an effective and safe treatment choice.
