Towards improving the mobility of patients with peripheral visual field defects with novel digital spectacles
American Journal of Ophthalmology Oct 17, 2019
Sayed AM, Kashem R, Abdel-Mottaleb M, et al. - In this prospective case series, researchers evaluated the effectiveness of novel Digital spectacles (DSpecs) to improve mobility of patients with peripheral visual field (VF) loss. With the DSpecs testing strategy, binocular VF defects were quantified. Investigators found that the diagnostic binocular VF testing with the DSpecs was similar to the integrated monocular standard automated perimetry based on point by point evaluation with a mismatch error of 7.0%. Findings suggested that 18 out of 20 patients were able to identify peripheral objects with the DSpecs that they had not previously been able to identify. They advised that DSpecs can enhance mobility by promoting patients' ability to better distinguish moving peripheral hazardous objects.
