Tourniquet use in arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders Aug 29, 2017
Kuo LT et al. – This systematic review and meta–analysis of 5 randomized clinical trials (RCTs; 226 participants) evaluated and compared the surgical outcomes following tourniquet use versus non–tourniquet use during arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. No significant differences were observed between the tourniquet and non–tourniquet groups with regard to postoperative pain, morphine doses, operative time, and muscle strength. Overall, ACL reconstruction surgery without tourniquet had no major disadvantages compared with tourniquet use. The study concluded that drain blood loss may be less with tourniquet use; however, drains are no longer routinely used in ACL reconstruction surgery.
