Total vs hemithyroidectomy for intermediate risk papillary thyroid cancer: A 23 year retrospective study in a tertiary center
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery May 18, 2019
Tsui KP, et al. - In a local tertiary hospital, disease specific survival (DSS) and recurrence free survival (RFS) were assessed over a median duration of 54 months among patients with intermediate risk papillary thyroid cancer who underwent surgery. Researchers recorded patients' demographic data, surgical and pathological details. Of 231 patients who were treated surgically, 137 (59%) were of intermediate risk. Hemithyroidectomy was performed on 45 (33%) patients and total thyroidectomy on 92 (67%) patients. Both groups had 100% 5 year DSS. The 5 year RFS was 92% in total thyroidectomy group and 100% in hemithyroidectomy group. Overall, a favorable 5 year survival was evident in intermediate risk papillary thyroid cancer. Hemithyroidectomy is acceptable in intermediate risk patients with a better risk profile.
