Total vs hemithyroidectomy for intermediate risk papillary thyroid cancer: A 23-year retrospective study in a tertiary center
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Apr 07, 2019
Tsui KP, et al. - A total of 231 individuals with papillary thyroid cancer were studied to assess the outcomes of total (n=45) vs hemithyroidectomy (n=92) for intermediate-risk papillary thyroid cancer. They found higher tumor and nodal staging in the total thyroidectomy group; according to the American Thyroid Association classification, they were predicted to have a greater recurrence risk. In both groups, a 100% 5-year disease-specific survival was observed. They recorded 92% and 100% as the 5-year recurrence-free survival in the total thyroidectomy and hemithyroidectomy groups, respectively which were significantly varied by the log-rank test. They suggested overall favorable 5-year survival in intermediate risk papillary thyroid cancer, with hemithyroidectomy as a satisfactory alternative in intermediate risk cases with a greater risk profile.
