Total intravenous anesthesia vs single pharmacological prophylaxis to prevent postoperative vomiting in children: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Paediatric Anaesthesia | Nov 06, 2017
Schaefer MS, et al. - As preventive strategies for postoperative vomiting in the pediatric population, total intravenous anesthesia and single-drug pharmacological prophylaxis were compared. Both of these options appeared equally effective, however, total intravenous anesthesia increased the risk for bradycardia due to oculocardiac reflex, during strabismus surgery. Therefore, it was concluded that addition of a single prophylactic antiemetic medication to inhalational anesthetics, when used for anesthesia maintenance, can sufficiently compensate for its emetogenic effects.
