Total hip arthroplasty or hemiarthroplasty for hip fracture
New England Journal of Medicine Dec 15, 2019
Bhandari M, Einhorn TA, Guyatt G, et al. - A total of 1,495 people who were 50 years of age or older and had a displaced femoral neck fracture were randomized to undergo either total hip arthroplasty (n = 718) or hemiarthroplasty (n = 723) in order to determine the impact of total hip arthroplasty in comparison with hemiarthroplasty for displaced femoral neck fractures. Amongst independently ambulating people with displaced femoral neck fractures, between individuals who were randomized to undergo total hip arthroplasty and those who were assigned to undergo hemiarthroplasty, the incidence of secondary procedures did not vary notably, and in function and quality of life over 24 months, total hip arthroplasty gave clinically insignificant advances over hemiarthroplasty.
