Total hip arthroplasty in adolescents and young adults for management of advanced corticosteroid-induced osteonecrosis secondary to treatment for hematologic malignancies
Journal of Arthroplasty Oct 23, 2020
Bernhard M, Barnes CL, DeFeo B, et al. - In this study, clinical outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA) were tested in adolescents and young adults treated for hematologic malignancies who developed advanced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). Researchers retrospectively examined medical records and imaging for perioperative complications, reoperations, functional assessment at last follow-up, and radiological outcomes in a single-institution cohort. The analysis included a total of 27 patients (41 hips) who had undergone THA (bilateral in 14 patients). The data exhibited that in adolescents and young adults, total hip arthroplasty offers symptomatic and functional improvement in patients with ONFH. The study found it to be safe with low perioperative complication rates even in individuals undergoing active treatment for malignancy.
