Total hip and knee arthroplasty are highly cost-effective procedures: The importance of duration of follow-up
Journal of Arthroplasty Jan 28, 2021
Wilson RA, Gwynne-Jones DP, Sullivan T, et al. - In this study, a cost-effectiveness analysis of total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA) was conducted in the New Zealand healthcare system. Researchers obtained data from 713 patients undergoing THA and 520 patients undergoing TKA at our local public hospital. They applied a continuous-time state-transition simulation model to calculate costs and health gains to 15 years. Cost-effectiveness was ascertained by estimating quality-adjusted life-years, treatment costs, and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios. The data exhibited that THA and TKA are highly cost-effective procedures over longer-term horizons. Both THA and TKA remained cost-effective in patients with less severe preoperative scores and older ages, while preoperative status and age were correlated with cost-effectiveness.
