Total and activity-induced energy expenditure measured over a one year in children with inflammatory bowel disease in clinical remission remain lower than healthy controls
Clinical Nutrition Feb 27, 2020
Godin JP, et al. - In children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (in remission) and healthy controls, researchers sought to evaluate total energy expenditure (TEE) using the doubly labelled water (DLW) method, resting energy expenditure (REE) using indirect calorimetry, and physical activity level using the actigraph GT3X+. In 21 children with IBD (mean age was 14.8 ± 1.5) and 24 healthy controls (mean age was 13.2 ± 2 years), TEE, REE, active-induced energy expenditure (AEE), and physical activity were measured at baseline. Parameters for children with IBD were further monitored after 6 and 12 months. According to results, TEE and AEE are reduced in IBD children in remission which can lead to a reduced moderate and vigorous physical activity level. In addition, the result highlight that the actigraph GT3X + could give good prediction of TEE in children with IBD at group level but remains highly variable at individual level.
