Torso injuries after fall from standing-empiric abdominal or thoracic CT imaging is not indicated
Injury Oct 20, 2019
Hagan NE, et al. - As at many trauma centers, falls from standing (FFS) have become the most common mechanism of injury, researchers examined if torso trauma intervention is rare in the FFS population, and physical examination sufficiently screens for torso injuries needing intervention. From January 1, 2014-December 31, 2016, they identified the reporting of 1,654 patients with FFS in the ACS-verified Level 1 trauma center registry. Of these, 728 had an abdominal or chest CT and a Glasgow Coma Scale Score of 15 and comprised the evaluable population. The analysis revealed the rarety of torso injuries in FFS. Among the study population, the intervention was undertaken in 13 abdominal injuries, and 11 chest injuries. They observed the sufficiency and safety of screening patients by physical examination and vital signs in allowing the use of selective abdominal and chest CT.
