Torsion of otherwise healthy ovary has a worse prognosis than torsion of pathologic ovary in children
Journal of Pediatric Surgery Dec 05, 2019
Margot O, Sami SM, Benoit T, et al. - Researchers examined prognosis related to torsion of an otherwise healthy ovary (THO) vs torsion with an underlying ovarian mass (TUOM) in children. From 1997 to 2016, 54 girls with an ovarian torsion who were provided treatment at their department were included. Of these, 27 presented with a TUOM; the others had a THO. Observations revealed that relative to TUOM, THO is more frequently linked with ovarian atrophy or hypotrophy. This finding may be explained by a less obvious diagnosis at the US and the early occurrence of THO before puberty with a less favorable hormonal climate.
