Topical preparations for the treatment of mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris: Systematic review and network meta-analysis
British Journal of Dermatology Jun 21, 2021
Stuart B, Maund E, Wilcox C, et al. - Using systematic review and network meta-analysis, researchers sought to identify the most effective and best tolerated topical treatments for acne. Primary outcomes were self-reported improvement in acne, and trial withdrawal, whereas secondary outcomes involved change in lesion counts, Investigator’s Global Assessment, change in the quality of life and total number of adverse events. In total, 81 papers were involved, reporting 40 trials with a total of 18,089 candidates. Although adapalene in combination with benzoyl peroxide may be the most efficient acne treatment, it has a slightly higher withdrawal rate than monotherapy. Inconsistent reporting of trial results prevented firmer conclusions from being reached.
