Topical benzoyl peroxide application on the shoulder reduces Propionibacterium acnes: A randomized study
Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Apr 04, 2018
Scheer VM, et al. - Researchers assessed if topical application of benzoyl peroxide (BPO) gel could decrease the presence of P acnes following shoulder surgery vs with today's standard treatment with chlorhexidine soap (CHS). They also gauged and compared the recolonization of the skin after surgical preparation and draping between the BPO- and CHS-treated groups. For the preoperative topical treatment at home, a total of 40 volunteers 24 men and 16 women were randomized. Findings suggested that for reducing P acnes on the skin and preventing its recolonization, the topical preparation with BPO before shoulder surgery could be effective.
