Tonsillectomy plus steroid pulse therapy is the most effective treatment in adult patients with C-Grade I IgA nephropathy, and the weight of the extracted palatine tonsils and Yamamoto scale have no significant correlation with the effects of this treatment

Kondo N, et al. - Investigators assessed 118 candidates of age more than 18 years to examine the clinical factors associated with a positive response to tonsillectomy plus steroid pulse therapy (TSP) for immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN). Using both univariate and multivariate analysis, they observed 56.8% of CR rate in all cases with respect to the C-Grade. They noted CR rate of C-Grade І (73.4%) cases was significantly greater than that of C-Grade II (39.0%) and C-Grade III individuals (30.8%). Fibrosis/hyalinization of the stroma of palatine tonsils revealed the statistical significance of C-Grade III cases in the univariate analysis only. They did not notice any relation of Yamamoto scale and weight of the extracted palatine tonsils with the clinical effect of TSP.
