Tonsillectomy or tonsillotomy? A systematic review for paediatric sleep-disordered breathing
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Oct 09, 2017
Zhang LY, et al. - A comparative appraisal was pursued of the clinical efficacy, post-operative morbidity, and cost-effectiveness of tonsillotomy and tonsillectomy in paediatric (<16yo) patients with sleep-disordered breathing. Tonsillotomy was recommended in children with obstructive surgical indications. It possibly yielded a reduction in the post-operative haemorrhage, pain, and enabled a rapid return to normal diet and activity. A decrease was noted in the healthcare burden, owing to fewer post-operative complications and reduced requirement of medical re-contact. In order to analyze the risk of recurrence advanced research was warranted. Additional classification of secondary haemorrhage severity was necessitated to completely clarify the clinical benefit of tonsillotomy.
