Time elapsed from initial presentation to diagnostic laparoscopy: Factors affecting diagnostic delay in adolescents with biopsy-confirmed endometriosis
Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Mar 26, 2021
Li H, Cho Y, Taylor H, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the factors influencing time from presentation to laparoscopy (diagnostic delay) in adolescents with biopsy-proven endometriosis via performing a retrospective review of medical records of women aged 14-25 who underwent diagnostic laparoscopy with biopsy-proven endometriosis. They identified 254 adolescents who underwent laparoscopy, 91 of whom (35.8%) had biopsy-proven endometriosis. A median time from presentation to definitive diagnosis of over 2 years was recorded for patients in the community setting. They identified a significantly shorter time to laparoscopy (-18.6 months) among patients with an adnexal mass on initial imaging (35%). Further, there was a shorter diagnostic delay in correlation with presentation to a subspecialist, however, they suggest performing further studies to determine the impact of subspecialty referral on access to diagnostic laparoscopy and potential practice differences between generalists and subspecialists.
