Thyroidectomy in patients who have undergone gastric bypass surgery

Head & Neck May 17, 2018

Goldenberg D, et al. - Experts evaluated whether or not patients with gastric bypass surgery were at an increased risk for recalcitrant, symptomatic hypocalcemia after thyroidectomy. An independent risk factor for developing profound hypocalcemia after thyroid surgery could be prior gastric bypass surgery. Findings suggested that in patients who have undergone gastric bypass surgery, refractory hypocalcemia was underreported. Authors suggested giving careful consideration to performing staged thyroidectomy and, in some cases, reversal of the bariatric surgery.
