Thyroidectomy for Graves’ disease predicts postoperative neck hematoma and hypocalcemia: A North American cohort study
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Jun 05, 2021
Mohtashami S, Richardson K, Forest VI, et al. - Using the Thyroid Procedure-Targeted National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) Database, researchers intended to determine if there is an association between Graves’ disease and the development of postoperative neck hematoma. From January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2018, the database of the NSQIP were involved. The sample consisted of 17,906 patients who underwent thyroidectomy. Data reported that the cumulative 30-day incidence of postoperative hematoma was 3.1% in the Graves’ disease group and 1.9% in other patients. Patients with Graves' disease who undergo thyroidectomy are more likely to experience postoperative hematoma and hypocalcemia than patients who undergo surgery for other reasons.
