Thyroid stimulating hormone testing in ED evaluation of patients with atrial fibrillation and various psychiatric diagnoses
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Jun 12, 2019
Apostol M, et al. - Researchers examined 252 Emergency Department (ED) patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) as well as patients with psychiatric diagnoses (psych) to investigate if an abnormal thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and/or AF predicted the need for hospital admission and if TSH is more likely decreased in AF and increased in psych patients. The two ED populations, 101 with AF and 152 Psych, were compared regarding the use of TSH testing. As per outcomes the 2 groups had no differences in TSH levels. An abnormal level was noted in 21%. Regression analysis revealed a predictive value of CHF and AF for hospital admission. They noted abnormal ED TSH levels in many with these AF or Psych diagnoses that could be valuable for diagnosis, maintenance, or continuous treatment for their conditions diagnoses.
