Thyroid nodules as a risk factor for thyroid cancer in patients with Grave disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies in surgically treated patients
Clinical Endocrinology Aug 07, 2019
Papanastasiou A, Sapalidis K, Goulis DG, et al. - In patients with Grave disease (GD), an autoimmune thyroid disorder characterized by hyperthyroidism, researchers determined the role of thyroid nodules as a risk factor for thyroid cancer. From inception until February 25, 2019, three electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus), as well as grey literature sources were searched for observational studies about the prevalence of thyroid cancer in GD patients. The systematic review and meta-analysis included seven studies with a total of 2,582 patients. Data reported that any thyroid cancer prevalence was 11.5%. In surgically treated patients with GD, the presence of thyroid nodules is positively linked to the prevalence of thyroid cancer, but since the heterogeneity among the studies is high, further prospective study is required.
