Thyroid nodules as a risk factor for thyroid cancer in patients with Graves disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies in surgically treated patients
Clinical Endocrinology Sep 19, 2019
Papanastasiou A, Sapalidis K, Goulis DG, et al. - Researchers analyzed the role of thyroid nodules as a risk factor for thyroid cancer in patients with Grave disease (GD). They performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of seven studies representing 2,582 patients, and found that any thyroid cancer prevalence was 11.5%. In surgically treated patients with GD, the presence of thyroid nodules was positively linked to the prevalence of thyroid cancer. According to the number of nodules (solitary vs multiple), a subgroup analysis exhibited no difference in thyroid cancer risk in patients with GD. However, as the heterogeneity among the studies is high, further prospective study is required, noted the researchers.
