Thyroid function, reduced kidney function and incident chronic kidney disease in a community-based population: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study
Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation Nov 06, 2017
Schultheiss UT, et al. - Researchers intended to shed light on the link between thyroid function and development of incident chronic kidney disease (CKD) in participants of community-based prospective Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study. They observed that elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4) and reduced triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations were related to reduced kidney function cross-sectionally. No association was observed with the development of incident CKD, which indicates that although altered thyroid function is not causally associated with CKD development in the general population, screening for thyroidal status may be especially relevant in persons with reduced kidney function.
