Thresholds of glycemia, insulin therapy, and risk for severe retinopathy in premature infants: A cohort study
PLoS Medicine Dec 16, 2020
Kermorvant-Duchemin E, Le Meur G, Plaisant F, et al. - In this cohort study, researchers intended to determine if there is a connection between hyperglycemia and severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in premature infants. They used 2 independent cohorts of 863 (primary cohort) and 316 (validation cohort) preterm infants born at < 30 weeks’ gestation to study the link between severe retinopathy of prematurity and 2 markers of glucose exposure between birth and day 21. Exposure to high glucose concentrations was found to be an independent risk factor for severe ROP, and cutoff levels were identified that were significantly associated with increased risk. In order to prevent ROP, the therapeutic effect of avoiding reaching these thresholds needs further review.
