Thresholds and mortality associations of paraspinous muscle sarcopenia in older trauma patients

Kaplan SJ, Zhao KL, Koren M, et al. - In older adults with injuries, sarcopenia is suggested to be a good surrogate for physical frailty. Measurement of the paraspinous muscle group in the mid-back could be readily done at the lower thoracic vertebral level on abdominal and chest computed tomography (CT) scans, which are acquired routinely during trauma evaluation. In view of the recent advancement in automated CT image analysis, paraspinous sarcopenia measurement may be valued as part of the trauma workup.
