Threat conditioning and its extinction in individuals with anxiety disorders
JAMA Feb 14, 2020
Marin MF, et al. - In individuals with and without anxiety disorders, researchers intended to use a threat conditioning and extinction protocol to conduct categorical (DSM-IV–based) and dimensional (Research Domain Criteria–based) estimations of psychophysiological, neural, and psychometric responses. Between March 2013 and May 2015, they performed a cross-sectional study at the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. In this cross-sectional study, a sum of 114 adults aged 18 to 65 years were enrolled [93 individuals (34 men and 59 women; mean [SD] age, 29.7 [11.1] years) with at least 1 anxiety disorder (specific phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, or panic disorder) and 21 participants (11 men and 10 women) without an anxiety disorder]. The data obtained from both approaches indicated complementary yet distinct findings. The data demonstrate the efficacy and importance of using both categorical and dimensional approaches to optimize the understanding of the etiology and treatment of anxiety symptoms.
