Thirty-day readmissions after upper and lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage: A national perspective in the United States
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Apr 11, 2019
Patel SD, et al. - Because upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage (UGIH) and lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage (LGIH) are two of the most common reasons for hospital admissions across the United States, researchers evaluated the causes of 30-day readmission for UGIH and LGIH patients. In the National Readmission Data 2013, the number of index admissions identified was 82,290 for UGIH and 133,114 for LGIH. According to findings, gastrointestinal disease was the most common reason for UGIH and LGIH readmission, followed by cardiac, infectious and respiratory etiologies. By addressing these readmission etiologies, adverse outcomes may be reduced. Metastatic disease, discharge against medical advice, and length of stay >3 days were included significant predictors of increased 30-day readmission. Metastatic disease, liver disease, and drug abuse were included predictors for 30-day readmission for LGIH.
