Thirty-day readmissions after hospitalization for hypertensive emergency
Hypertension Nov 16, 2018
Kumar N, et al. - Researchers assessed incidence, causes, and predictors of 30-day readmission after hospitalization for hypertensive emergency. They identified index hospitalizations for hypertensive emergency by using the 2013 to 2014 Nationwide Readmissions Database. They found that the overall incidence of unplanned 30-day readmissions was 17.8%. They reported that 1 of 6 patients who were hospitalized for hypertensive emergency had an unplanned 30-day readmission. These readmissions were frequently attributed to heart failure, uncontrolled hypertension, and stroke; however, non-cardiovascular causes accounted for more than 50% of all readmissions. The identified significant predictors of readmission included age < 65 years, female sex, comorbid disease burden, substance use disorders, and socioeconomic risk factors.
