Thirty-day postoperative morbidity and mortality in elderly women with breast cancer: An analysis of the NSQIP database
Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Jun 18, 2018
Angarita FA, et al. - Elderly (≥ 70 years) women with breast cancer were examined for the postoperative complication rates. In addition, the rates were compared to those observed in young (40–69 years) women. On searching the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database (2004–2014), researchers identified 100,037 women (of these, 26.7% were elderly) with invasive breast cancer who underwent surgery. Observations revealed that the overall 30-day postoperative complication rate was very low in elderly women despite the more common occurrence of some specific 30-day postoperative morbidities. The safety of breast cancer surgery was thus supported in well-selected elderly patients.
