Thirty-day outcomes in the operative management of intestinal-cutaneous fistulas: A NSQIP analysis

Christensen MA, Gaitanidis A, Parks J, et al. - Using the 2015–2017 American College of Surgeon National Surgical Quality Improvement datasets (ACS-NSQIP), researcher sought to define the morbidity linked with current treatment strategies in the surgical management of Intestinal-cutaneous fistulas (ICFs). They identified 4,197 patients undergoing ICF-repair [mean age: 55.9 (SD 15.3)]. Findings suggest association of surgical repair of intestinal-cutaneous fistulas with significant morbidity. About half of the study cohort experienced a postoperative complication. In this cohort, 30-day re-operative rates of 11.0% and 30-day readmission rates of 15.3% were observed. A sevenfold rise in mortality was observed in correlation with emergent repair of an intestinal-cutaneous fistula. .
