Thigh muscle fat infiltration is associated with impaired physical performance despite remission in Cushing syndrome
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Mar 26, 2020
Martel-Duguech L, Alonso-Jiménez A, Bascuñana H, et al. - Researchers conducted this cross-sectional study to measure the degree of fatty infiltration in the thigh muscles of “cured” Cushing syndrome (CS) patients and assess the connection between intramuscular fatty infiltration and physical performance. Using MRI and 2-point Dixon sequence, the percentage fat fraction (FF) of the thigh muscles in the anterior, posterior, and combined anterior and posterior compartments were analyzed. In all the compartments analyzed, the fat fraction was increased in patients compared with controls. In patients, higher FF was negatively linked to performance on functional tests. For patients with "cured" CS, thigh muscle-fatty infiltration is increased and linked to poorer muscle performance.
