Thermal injuries from exploding electronic cigarettes
Burns Mar 07, 2018
Hickey S, et al. - Given that electronic cigarettes (ECs) are a new public health danger, researchers here sought to inform burn surgeons regarding management and treatment of burn injuries related to EC device ignition. In this work, they noticed that the majority of EC burns occurred in males that carried the devices in their pants pocket. EC explosions caused small TBSA burns that were deep 2nd and 3rd-degree wounds. They recommended informing EC device users of the dangers associated with EC use and advising them to carry EC devices away from their body in dedicated carrying cases without loose metallic items.
