Thermal ablation vs cryotherapy or loop excision to treat women positive for cervical precancer on visual inspection with acetic acid test: Pilot phase of a randomized controlled trial
The Lancet Oncology Nov 23, 2019
Pinder LF, Parham GP, Basu P, et al. - In this pilot phase of a randomized controlled trial in routine screen-and-treat clinics providing cervical screening using visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) in Lusaka, Zambia of 750 non-pregnant women, aged 25 years or older, who were eligible for ablative therapy, experts contrasted thermal ablation using the new device with cryotherapy. Individuals were randomized (1:1:1) to thermal ablation, cryotherapy, or large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ), using computer-generated allocation. Results preliminarily imply that in low-income and middle-income countries, thermal ablation has comparable treatment success to cryotherapy, without the possible drawbacks of giving cryotherapy. Nonetheless, the study was not powered to authenticate the relationship between the techniques and results from the ongoing randomized controlled trial these results are required to be validated.
