Therapy-related cardiac risk in childhood cancer survivors: An analysis of the childhood cancer survivor study

Journal of Clinical Oncology Mar 18, 2019

Bates JE, et al. - Researchers analyzed data to assess the consequences of radiotherapy dose and exposed cardiac volume, select chemotherapeutic agents, and age at exposure on risk for late-onset cardiac disease in childhood cancer survivors. They noted 4.8% to be the cumulative incidence of cardiac disease 30 years from diagnosis. An association of low to moderate radiotherapy doses (5.0 to 19.9 Gy) to large cardiac volumes (≥ 50% of heart) with an improved rate of cardiac disease as compared with survivors without cardiac radiotherapy exposure was evident. They observed a dose-response relationship between anthracycline chemotherapy and heart failure among younger kids (age ≤ 13 years) at a higher risk for heart failure after relative dosing.
