The yield of computed tomography of the head among patients presenting with syncope: A systematic review
Academic Emergency Medicine Apr 28, 2019
Viau JA, et al. – Via data analysis, researchers evaluated the utility and yield of head computed tomography (CT) and risk factors for serious intracranial conditions among subjects with syncope. They identified and reviewed 17 articles that included 3,361 syncope patients. With a 3.8% diagnostic yield and considerable heterogeneity, 54.4% of subjects were found to have received head CT in eight ED studies. They also found that 44.8% received head CT with a 1.2% yield and no heterogeneity in six in-hospital studies. They observed the following risk factors: abnormal neurologic findings, age ≥ 65 years, trauma, warfarin use, and seizure/stroke history.
