The value of serological screening prior to conversion total hip arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 04, 2020
Cichos KH, et al. - Researchers tried to find out to the value of serological testing prior to conversion THA in predicting infection and to distinguish optimal serological values for routine diagnostic workup prior to conversion THA. Between 2013 and 2018, all individuals at the tertiary referral center undergoing conversion THA after hip/acetabular fracture procedure were retrospectively examined. The study found that twelve of eighty-seven (14%) individuals undergoing conversion THA developed an infection. Individuals undergoing conversion THA from the internal fixation of hip/acetabular fractures are still at high risk for developing PJI even without clinical signs and symptoms. All individuals experiencing conversion THA should have CRP estimated preoperatively as a part of the diagnostic workup for the underlying infection. Future study is required to create a preoperative diagnostic algorithm incorporating CRP, similar to MSIS criteria, dedicated to patients undergoing conversion THA.
