The value of preoperative anti-thyroidperoxidase antibody as a novel predictor of recurrence in papillary thyroid carcinoma
International Journal of Cancer Nov 21, 2018
Song E, et al. – In this study, researchers investigated whether preoperative anti-thyroidperoxidase antibody (TPOAb) can predict the prognosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), particularly for recurrence. Study participants included 2,070 patients who had total thyroidectomy for classical type PTC with tumor size ≥ 1cm and with available data on preoperative TPOAb and TgAb. These participants were compared with respect to disease-free survival (DFS) according to the presence of preoperative TPOAb, TgAb, and coexistent chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. They observed a significantly better DFS among patients with positive preoperative TPOAb vs those without positive preoperative TPOAb, while DFS did not differ according to preoperative TgAb status. Based on these findings, presence of preoperative TPOAb can serve as a novel prognostic factor in predicting structural persistence/recurrence of PTC.
