The use of tamsulosin to prevent postoperative urinary retention in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair: A randomized double-blind placebo- controlled study
Surgical Endoscopy Oct 09, 2020
Caparelli ML, Shikhman A, Runyan B, et al. - The efficacy of tamsulosin on the incidence of postoperative urinary retention (POUR) was evaluated in patients undergoing totally extraperitoneal (TEP) LIHR. Researchers conducted a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial including 169 males undergoing elective TEP LIHR. Tamsulosin was administered to the patients 2 h before surgery, and their follow-up was performed for up to 24 h postoperatively for episodes of POUR. The overall rate of 9% was reported for POUR. The rate of POUR did not differ between the placebo (9.9%) and tamsulosin groups (7.9%). Findings overall suggest no reduction in the risk of POUR among males undergoing elective TEP LIHR in correlation with receiving tamsulosin preoperatively.
