The use of regional or neuraxial anesthesia for below-knee amputations may reduce the need for perioperative blood transfusions

Malik O, et al. - In this study, perioperative morbidity and mortality were compared in a study population receiving regional anesthesia (RA), or neuraxial anesthesia, compared with general anesthesia (GA) anesthesia, for lower extremity amputations. Findings demonstrated no mortality benefit of RA over GA, nonetheless, RA may attenuate the requirement for perioperative blood transfusions.
