The use of knee mega-prosthesis for the management of distal femoral fractures: A systematic review
Injury Sep 20, 2019
Meluzio MC, et al. - Via performing a systematic review, researchers sought to identify the fracture, both acute and chronic, involving distal femur that should be treated by using a mega-prosthesis. They reviewed 13 articles and identified 104 patients who were treated with knee megaprosthesis. They identified three categories of patients: 29 patients were affected by supracondylar femur fracture; 51 patients occurred with a periprosthetic fracture; 24 patients suffered a non-union of a previous supracondylar fracture. Outcomes suggest that for patients affected by distal femur fractures (either acute, periprostethic or non-union), megaprosthesis represent a viable treatment option as they enable immediate weight-bearing, shorter hospital stay, quick recovery of knee function and activities of daily living.
